Archaeologists from Ain Shams University in Cairo discovered a sphinx from Roman times during excavations in the temple complex of Dendera. The head of the statue is decorated with a nemes, a headdress that was a symbol of pharaonic power, Heritage Daily reports. place from the time of the Middle Kingdom to the time of the Roman emperor Trajan.

During recent excavations, scientists found a Roman structure to the east of the main of the complex, where the temple dedicated to the Mountain is located. The structure was built of sandstone and consists of two levels. On the first of them, there is a large pool for collecting water from the Byzantine period, where researchers discovered a statue of a sphinx from the Roman era.

The head of the sphinx has a nemes, and on its forehead is depicted Urey, an Egyptian cobra that was a symbol of sovereignty, royalty power, deity and divine power.

“A preliminary examination of the face of the sphinx suggests that the sphinx is an image of the Roman emperor Claudius,” said the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt.

Claudius ruled Egypt , which at that time was under the rule of the Romans, approximately from 10 BC to 54 AD.
