History of the holiday

According to beliefs, Alexey lived in the 4th century, he was the son of rich parents. Once in the temple, he had a vision that his mother was dying and being buried, after which he decided to beg God for life for her. Alexei left his bride on his wedding day, renounced his past life and left home.

He spent the next 17 years in the city of Edessa, leading an ascetic life and spending his days in prayer. Once, the Virgin Mary appeared to the priest of the local church, who ordered to find a man named Alexey, calling him a man of God. After that, many learned about the righteous man and began to read him.

But Alexei did not want fame, left the city and returned to his native Rome. He came to his parents' house in the guise of a beggar. The parents did not recognize their son, but looked over him and allowed him to live in their barn, giving him food from their table. So Oleksiy lived another 17 years. After the saint's death, a note was found on his body, which explained who he really was.
