France refused to return to Russia paintings by Serov and Konchalovsky

French authorities detained two paintings from the collection of the Morozovs, who participated in the exhibition Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. According to Medusa, these are paintings by Peter Konchalovsky and Valentin Serov.

According to Le Monde, France's “Self-Portrait in Gray” by Konchalovsky (1910) and the portrait of Timothy Moroz by Serov's brush (1891) will remain in France. And the newspaper Le Figaro claims that the second case is a portrait of Margarita Morozova, which Serov painted in 1910.

It is alleged that Konchalovsky's painting is owned by Russian billionaire Piotr Aven, who was on the EU sanctions list after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The French Ministry of Culture has said the painting will remain in the country “as long as its owner is subject to an asset freeze.” The president of the museum is billionaire Vyacheslav Kantor, close to the president of the aggressor country, Vladimir Putin. Cantor has been under EU sanctions since April 8.

The French Ministry of Culture said that the second canvas belongs to the Dnieper Art Museum, one of the oldest museums in Ukraine. The agency said that the painting will remain in France “until the situation in the country will not create conditions for a safe return.”

An exhibition of works from the Morozov collection was held in Paris from September 22, 2021 to April 3, 2022. It presented about 200 works by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Matisse and other authors. As most of the collection belongs to Russian state museums, the French authorities will return the paintings to Russia in the coming days.
