The head of the British Foreign Ministry, Liz Truss, supports the idea of confiscating frozen Russian assets in this country and redistributing them among the victims of the Russian war in Ukraine. Thus, the country wants to follow a similar example of Canada, writes The Guardian. The politician made the statement on the background of the conference on the restoration of Ukraine, which is to begin in Lugano, Switzerland, on Monday.

According to preliminary estimates, more than 120 thousand houses in Ukraine were destroyed during the Russian invasion, which created the need for billions in revenue to be able to contribute to the economic recovery of the country.

“I support this concept. We are looking at this very carefully. Canadians actually just passed a law. This is an issue on which we are working together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but I, of course, agree with the concept.”

Seized funds could be transferred both to individuals in the form of reparations and to the Ukrainian state. The UK can currently freeze Russian assets under the Economic Crime Act for 56 days and extend the freeze for a further 56 days. During this period, the owner of the asset cannot benefit from the asset in any way.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom recently stated:

“Humanitarian aid and demining programs will help rebuild villages and cities, and in the long term, Britain will share economic and financial expertise on turning Ukraine into a global center for investment, businesses and advanced technologies”.

According to available estimates, about 6.4 million Ukrainians left the country, and another 6-7 million citizens left their homes and moved to the western parts of Ukraine. The cost of the war is estimated at $1 billion if it lasts until the end of the year. The International Monetary Fund estimated Ukraine's balance of payments deficit by June at approximately 14.3 billion euros ($15 billion).

Recall that the other day the UN High Commissioner said that if there is a new wave of refugees from Ukraine, Europe will accept everyone.
