The European Commission has presented a plan to quickly end its dependence on Russian energy resources

It addresses three main areas for achieving the goal, as well as assistance to Ukraine.

European Commission presents plan The European Commission has unveiled an energy reform plan for REPowerEU aimed at ending dependence on energy supplies from Russia in response to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the European Commission. </p data-src=

“There is a double need to transform Europe's energy system: end the EU's dependence on Russia's fossil fuels, which are used as economic and political weapons and cost European taxpayers almost 100 billion euros a year, and tackle the climate crisis,” the statement said. EC.

According to the communiqué, 85% of Europeans are in favor of reducing their dependence on Russian gas and oil as soon as possible in order to support Ukraine.

REPowerEU proposes to do this through energy conservation, diversification of energy supplies and accelerated development of renewable energy sources, which will help replace fossil fuels in homes, industry and electricity production.

Energy savings

The European Commission believes that energy saving is the fastest and cheapest way to overcome the current energy crisis and reduce costs.

Thus, it is recommended to strengthen long-term measures to improve energy efficiency, including increasing the mandatory energy efficiency indicator from 9% to 13%. The EC has also developed recommendations on public relations and production, which can help reduce gas and oil consumption by 5%.

Diversification of energy supplies

According to the document , in recent months the EU has achieved “record volumes” of liquefied natural gas imports and increased gas supplies through pipelines, thanks to cooperation with international partners.

“The recently established EU energy platform, supported by regional target groups, will allow for voluntary joint purchases of gas, LNG and hydrogen by pooling demand, optimizing infrastructure use and coordinating interactions with suppliers,” Brussels said. It is noted that in addition to the mechanism of joint procurement, the European Commission will also consider legislative measures necessary to diversify gas supplies by member states. It is planned to build long-term partnerships with suppliers and cooperation in the field of hydrogen and other environmentally friendly technologies.

According to the statement, the EU will support Ukraine, Moldova, the Western Balkans, the Eastern Partnership and other vulnerable partners against the background of Russian aggression.

The continuation of assistance to our state through joint work in ensuring energy security and the functioning of the energy sector was especially emphasized. The EU will also promote future trade in electricity and renewable hydrogen with Ukraine and the restructuring of the energy system under the REPowerUkraine initiative.

Development of Renewable Energy Sources

European Commission proposes mass expansion and accelerating the use of renewable energy sources in electricity generation, industry, construction and transport. It is believed that this will also help speed up the transition to “green” energy and gradually reduce prices.

In particular, the EC recommends increasing the target for renewable energy by 2030 from 40% to 45%. This will contribute to the development of other areas: doubling solar photovoltaic capacity by 2025, gradually introducing a commitment to install solar panels in new buildings, doubling the pace of heat pumps, integrating geothermal and solar energy into district heating systems, etc.

The European Union is going to support the reduction of fossil fuel consumption by industry and the transport sector in various ways to reduce energy dependence on Russia.
