“Last year I was nominated as a candidate for the UN Committee against Torture and competed with the Russian Federation for an expert position in this committee,” commented Oleksandra Matviychuk, chairman of the Center for Civil Liberties, at the UN General Assembly. – Russia won, despite the fact that on the eve of the vote were opened files on the resource gulagu-net.ru about the horrific torture used in the Russian penitentiary system against people who are completely under the control of the Russian state. Therefore, today’s suspension of Russia’s work in the UN Human Rights Council is a clear signal that Russia is losing influence in the political arena and within the UN. Russia’s threats against countries that even abstain from voting that it would be seen as an unfriendly move did not work. “
The actions of the occupiers in Ukraine are part of a broad and long struggle of the Russian authorities against respect for human rights and human rights defenders, and Russian influence throughout the region is hampering democratic transformation.
