Ambassador on special assignments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Anton Korynevich said that the European Union is preparing a position on possible options for creating a special tribunal to prosecute the leadership of the Russian Federation for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, and the state is ready for constructive cooperation in terms of finding the most appropriate mechanisms. This is reported by Ukrinform.

Korynevich noted that currently all options for the creation of a special tribunal are being analyzed, but for Ukraine the most priority is the one that will ensure its maximum internationality, because this will allow to legally resolve the issue of official immunities of the highest political and military leadership of Russia.

“It is very important for us that today our colleagues from the EU, in particular from the European External Action Service, are preparing an option paper, i.e., in essence, a position on possible options regarding the implementation of responsibility for committing the crime of aggression against Ukraine based on the conclusions of the European Council meeting on 20 – October 21. We expect, of course, this position for analysis and further work, and we are absolutely constructive in terms of finding the most appropriate approaches that will comply with all provisions of international law and practice,” said the ambassador on special assignments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Korynevich, Ukraine currently has considerable political support for the need to hold the Russian Federation accountable for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and to create a special tribunal. In this context, he recalled the relevant resolutions of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, resolutions of the national parliaments of Ukraine, Lithuania, Estonia and the Netherlands.

“We hope that we will have more. And this, of course, is an important political message from the international community, that there is an understanding that the mechanism of prosecution for committing the crime of aggression against Ukraine and the creation of a special tribunal must be found,” he added. .
