Ukrainian scientists have discovered an unexpected property of remdezivir, which is treated with COVID-19

Antiviral drug remdezivir, first developed for the treatment of hepatitis C and then used among others drugs for the treatment of COVID-19 , which can change the dynamics of the release of neurotransmitters, at least in vitro (in the laboratory). This discovery was made by Ukrainian scientists after analyzing the membrane-tropic effects of remdesivir, the results of which were published in the scientific journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta – Biomembranes , reports a leading researcher at the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine < span style = "font-weight: 400;"> Semen Yesilevsky in Telegram .

“It turned out that the drug is not only willing to integrate into cell membranes, but also able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in brain tissues. It turned out that it is not just passively sitting in the membranes of neurons, but can change the dynamics of the release of neurotransmitters (at least in vitro) “, – said in a statement.

Remdezivir – it is an amphiphilic drug, ie, due to its physical characteristics, it must be incorporated into the lipid membranes of cells. “It was clear to everyone, but surprisingly, no one has ever investigated whether remdezevir affects the membranes and what it can lead to,” – says the scientist.
