April 24, 2022 in The Day of Solidarity with Ukraine took place in Budapest as part of the MITEM International Theater Festival.

On this day at the prestigious international theater festival a new play by Ukrainian director Ivan Urivsky “Beztalanna” based on the classic play by Ivan Karpenko-Kary was shown. Due to the current wartime circumstances, the Ivan Franko National Theater could not directly attend one of the most important theater forums in Europe. Therefore, within the framework of the MITEM festival, the festival community was presented with an online version of the Ukrainian play “Talentless”, based on the classic Ukrainian play by Ivan Karpenko-Kary. The play was written in 1886 for the great Ukrainian actress Maria Zankovetska, who was given the role of the sorceress Varka, but the actress herself later chose the role of untalented Sofia in the play and thus entered the history of Ukrainian theater: she played her “Talentless” even in front of the critical chauvinist public of Moscow and St. Petersburg, but even there, “Talentless” was accompanied by success.

On the stage of the Ivan Franko National Theater the play “Talentless” was staged in 1937 by the founder of the theater Gnat Yura (the role of Varka was played by the prima of the theater Natalia Uzhviy). In 1965, directors S. Sklyarenko and P. Shkryoba staged their version of “Talentless” with Galina Yablonskaya (Sofia), Nonna Koperzhinskaya (Anna) and Pavel Morozenko (Gnat). The play was a success for a long time. And already in 1979 the famous director Volodymyr Ogloblin re-read “Talentless” on the stage of the Franks. The main roles were played by Polina Lazova, Larisa Khorolets, Polina Kumanchenko, Mykola Zadniprovsky.

The play “Talentless” directed by Ivan Urivsky appeared at the end of 2021 and managed to collect a number of enthusiastic reviews from theater critics and a lot of positive feedback from theatergoers on social networks. Actors Oleksiy Bogdanovich, Oleg Stalchuk, Irina Doroshenko, Natalia Korpan, Akmal Gurezov, Zakhar Nechipor, Marina Koshkina, Vira Mazur-Zinevich, Khrystyna Fedorak, Svitlana Kosolapova, Vyacheslav Hostikoyev are involved in Uryvsky's play.

Negotiations on the screening of Urivsky's “Untalented” at the MITEM International Festival in Budapest began immediately after the Kyiv premiere, as theater Europe today is interested in modern directorial interpretations of Ukrainian classics. In addition, a year ago in Budapest enthusiastically accepted the previous festival performance of Ivan Uryvsky – “Limerivna” based on the play by Panas Mirnyi. Then the Ukrainian festival performance was sold out at the festival, and the heated discussion of the Ukrainian production lasted almost an hour after the festival screening.

“I am sometimes asked why I often turn to Ukrainian classics of the 19th century,” says ZN.UA directed by Ivan Urivsky. – There is no special repertoire calculation in this. I'm just convinced and I always say that Ukrainian classics have a hidden extremely powerful artistic energy, so I'm interested in working on the texts of Karpenko-Kary, Panas Myrny, Ivan Franko, Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky. I do not hide, my creative imagination is confused today by some Ukrainian texts by Mark Kropyvnytsky and Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky. But now we all need, first of all, a victory over the fierce Russian aggressor. And only then, in the victorious time, it will be possible to dream of both Ukrainian and world classics on the National Stage of the Ivan Franko Theater. ”

The Ivan Franko National Theater reports that the funds raised at the MITEM festival in Budapest will go to support IDPs from Ukraine.

This is not the first time the Ivan Franko Theater has taken part in a prestigious European theater festival. In addition to “Limerivani” in Budapest were also presented performances of “Coriolanus” by W. Shakespeare and Morituri and salutant W. Stefanyk staged by Dmitry Bogomazov. Bogomazov's new play “Sing, Lolo, Sing!” Was to be shown at this year's festival in Budapest, but wartime circumstances did not help it and some other theatrical projects to be included in the festival's bill.

Meanwhile, on April 24, 2022, as part of the MITEM festival on the Day of Solidarity with Ukraine, those interested were able to join the fundraiser for refugees fleeing the war.

A special event of this “Day of Solidarity with Ukraine” is the project “Ukrainian Fire”, concert-performance DAKH DAUGHTERS, (Kyiv, Ukraine – France).

The MITEM festival has long been sponsored by the artistic director of the National Hungarian Theater in Budapest, Attila of Vienna (Honored Artist of Ukraine since 2001 and a graduate of the Kyiv Karpenko-Kary Theater University). He was once the director of the Transcarpathian Regional Hungarian Drama Theater in Berehove, and since 2013 he has headed the Hungarian National Theater, making it one of the brightest European theater groups.

and from various theaters, including:

“Cupid” by the poems of Thanasis Alevras (Attis Theater, Athens – Greece), director: Theodoros Terzopoulos;

“Dance of Delhi” by Ivan Vyripaev (OKT/City Theater, Vilnius – Lithuania), director: Oskaras Korshunovas;

“Shadow Game” by Valery Novarina (Théâtre national, Marseille – France), director: Jean Bellorini;

“Macbeth” by William Shakespeare (Sardegna Theater, Teatropersona Company, Cagliari – Italy), director: Alessandro Serra;

“A O Show” (Lune Production – Vietnam), director: Tan Li

The current full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has significantly affected this year's festival poster MITEM. Due to the war, some theater groups were not able to come to the festival at all. And Russian theaters, because of the war that Russia unleashed in Ukraine, simply did not get to the international European theater festival.
