When there is no light: which generator is suitable for the home

Due to the military invasion of the Russian Federation, hostilities continue in Ukraine, and missile strikes of the enemy damage residential buildings and objects of critical infrastructure. Fan outages force Ukrainians to look for autonomous sources of electricity supply. The Ministry of Reintegration gave recommendations on how to choose a generator for the home.

What should be the power

The greater the power of the generator, the more household appliances can work from it. For the simultaneous operation of common household appliances (refrigerator, iron, electric kettle), a generator with a capacity of 3 kW is enough.

Devices with a capacity of 5 kW will allow you to additionally connect a TV, computer or cook dinner on an electric stove. The more powerful of them will be suitable for powering large houses or commercial premises.

Diesel or gasoline

The most popular are diesel or gasoline generators. Gasoline ones have a low noise level, a low cost, but they are not able to work for a long time, and because of the high cost of gasoline, each kilowatt is relatively expensive.

Diesel ones tolerate heavy loads well, are less expensive, but have a high noise level and cost more expensive than gasoline ones.

Generator phases

The generator can be single-phase 220 W or three-phase (380 W). To the first option, you can connect devices with a consumption of up to 220 W, the second is intended for industrial equipment.

Generator start type

There are generators with manual, electric, remote or automatic start. Manual start is the most common in generators with a capacity of up to 5 kW. To start it, you need to pull the cord.

If there is an electric starter, the device is turned on with the ignition key located on the control panel. Remote start allows you to turn on the device using the remote control that is attached to the electric starter. Automatic – connects the station automatically in the event of a power outage in the building.

Before buying a generator, you need to decide on its power. To do this, you need to know how many devices are planned to be powered from it. You should calculate their total power and add 20-30% to the obtained figure.
