WP: In the US, the idea of supporting Ukraine in the war until the end is losing popularity

Most Americans continue to support the sending of weapons and economic aid to Ukraine. This is evidenced by the results of a survey published on Monday. But with the onset of winter, Americans were divided in their views on whether Washington should induce Ukraine to establish peace through negotiations as soon as possible.

The Washington Post writes about this, adding that two-thirds of respondents supported providing Ukraine with weapons and economic aid. And three-quarters of those polled were in favor of accepting Ukrainian refugees and imposing sanctions against Russia. This is evidenced by the findings of a study conducted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs think tank last month.

However, despite such strong support from the American public, Republicans are now less fond of helping Ukraine than they were in the spring. Currently, 55% of the surveyed supporters of the party are “in favor” of sending weapons. Although in July this position was held by 68%, and in March – 80%. Also, data from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs indicate that half of Republicans supported providing Ukraine with economic aid last month. Although three-quarters of the party's supporters were in favor of it in March.

The Washington Post reminds us that the Russian war against Ukraine has been going on for the tenth month. And its end is still not visible on the horizon. So Americans are divided on whether Washington should persuade Ukraine to start peace talks with Russia. 40% of respondents said that the US should maintain the current level of support indefinitely. 53% of Democratic Party voters favor this approach.

“But in July, 58% of American respondents agreed that their country should support Ukraine as long as necessary, even if fuel and food prices rise. Now 47% say that Washington should push Kyiv to a peace agreement in the near future,” the newspaper writes.

At the same time, most Republicans would like the US to gradually withdraw its support from Ukraine. 29% of the total number of Americans polled share such views. At the same time, about a quarter believe that the US and its allies should go to military intervention to help Ukraine win the war faster.

Data from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs also found that Americans are split on who has the upper hand on the battlefield: Ukraine or Russia. About a third of democrats say that the advantage is still in the hands of the Ukrainian army. 23% of Republicans and 22% of independents share the same opinion. But in general, 46% of Americans believe that neither Ukraine nor Russia has an advantage in the war.
