Helping displaced people: how to get payments from the UN

Due to the military invasion of the Russian Federation, many Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes and become internally displaced persons (IDPs). IDPs can receive payments from the state and some international organizations. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has told who can issue payments and what documents are required for this.

Who can receive assistance from the UN

The amount of assistance is 2,220 hryvnias for each member. Assistance is paid monthly over a three-month period.

Persons or families who:

  • are internally displaced persons as of February 24, 2022 may receive cash assistance;
  • suffered as a result of military actions from February 24 in such regions as Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Odesa, Zaporizhzhya, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy regions;
  • returned to their places of permanent residence after forced relocation to another region/countries due to hostilities.

Furthermore, families with only one parent, with many children under the age of 18, and elderly dependents (55 years and older) can receive funds older) or with special needs (disability, chronic diseases, etc.).

Payments from the United Nations can also be made by a single elderly person or several such persons, or an elderly person with one or more children under the age of 18, foster families who take care of children.

To receive assistance for a person must also meet socio-economic criteria and have a monthly income of less than 5,400 hryvnias per family member. In addition, if a person has already received financial assistance in the amount of 2,200 hryvnias from another UN agency or humanitarian organization, then such a person cannot count on this assistance.
