The Sejm of Poland calls on the authorities of Georgia to immediately release the imprisoned ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili for treatment abroad and asks the international community to save the life and health of the former president of Georgia, reports WNP.PL.

438 deputies of the lower house of the Polish parliament voted for the corresponding resolution. Eight elected members voted against, one more abstained.

As the document states, in connection with alarming information about the state of health of the former president of Georgia, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland calls on the Georgian authorities to immediately allow Mikheil Saakashvili to undergo the necessary specialized treatment.

The deputies referred to the availability of information about the rapid deterioration of his health and the doctor's recommendation to immediately consult a specialist, which is impossible to do in Georgia due to the lack of appropriate medical facilities.

The Seimas drew attention to the significant contribution of Mikheil Saakashvili to the formation of the pro-European sentiments of Georgians, which resulted in the Georgian authorities submitting an application for membership in the European Union in 2022.

“The Sejm of the Republic of Poland calls on the Georgian authorities to be guided by the universal principles of humanism, according to which human life and health are the highest value, and calls to immediately allow Mikheil Saakashvili to undergo the necessary specialized treatment that meets world standards, in accordance with the recommendations of doctors, and also calls on the international the community of friends of Georgia to solidarity and persistent actions to save the life and health of Mikheil Saakashvili,” the resolution reads.

Previously, Polish diplomat and member of the European Parliament Jacek Sariusz-Wolski stated that Georgia's accession to the European Union directly related to the condition of the former president of the country Mikheil Saakashvili.

Previously, the president of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili stated that, according to Georgian laws, she cannot pardon the ex-president of the country Mikheil Saakashvili, because the trial in his cases has not been completed. However, she expressed hope that the Georgian court “will be up to the task” and will make the “correct” decision in the event that the opinion of medical experts on the state of health of the ex-president of Georgia confirms that it is impossible to provide adequate treatment in Georgia to the patient with his diagnosis.
