Lviv National Opera Theater named after Solomiya Krushelnytska combines its volunteer activities, organizational support of the festival “Melpomene of Tavria” with active work on new music projects that want to present to Lviv residents and guests in the fall. Among such new ambitious musical projects is the opera by Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych “Terrible Revenge” (Libretto by E. Stankovych based on a novel by M. Gogol). The world premiere is announced in early November 2022.

“Yevhen Stankovych belongs to the constellation of the most famous Ukrainian composers of the world level, who will turn 80 this year. During the long journey of writing the opera, many iconic figures of Ukrainian culture joined this idea, in particular Stefan Turchak and Yuriy Ilyenko. The premiere was originally scheduled for the 200th anniversary of Gogol’s birth at the National Opera of Ukraine (2007), but the author continued to work on the score for a long time. At the initiative of the Lviv National Opera, the premiere of this opera will take place in Lviv in November 2022, “said Vasyl Vovkun, artistic director of the Lviv National Opera and People's Artist of Ukraine, to ZN.UA.
The libretto was created by E. Stankovich himself based on the novel of the same name by M. Gogol, which reveals the events of the Cossack era.
The Lviv Opera says that one of the best interpreters of Stankovych's work, People's Artist of Ukraine, artistic director and chief conductor of the National Honored Academic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine Volodymyr Sirenko has been invited to conduct.
A well-known German director is involved in the international production team. Andreas Weirich and set designer Anna Shetl, who collaborate primarily with the Bavarian State Opera. An example of effective cooperation with them was the successful realization in 2021 of the operas of Ukrainian composer Dmytro Bortnyansky “Falcon” and “Alkyd”, which received a wide international resonance.
“Such a creative combination of artists in the international production team will ensure going beyond the purely traditional interpretation of the plot and characters and promote the interpenetration of different creative worldviews, harmonious combination of Ukrainian tradition and European innovation,” says Vasyl Vovkun.
According to the artistic director of the Lviv Opera, “in such dramatic wartime times as now, Ukrainian culture and its best representatives (at the level of Yevhen Stankovych) unite and unite the Ukrainian nation in a period of dramatic historical trials.”
