The airspace over the Russian city of St. Petersburg was closed and a special operation was announced

In Russia, the sky over St. Petersburg was closed for civil aviation flights due to a recorded unknown object, Russian media reports.

According to the Flightradar24 service, the Pulkovo airport temporarily does not receive or send planes, and the Russian military aircraft is operating in the sky. We are talking about at least two fighters – Su-35 and MiG-31.

The local administration of St. Petersburg said that “flight delays of up to 12 hours have been announced at Pulkovo airport.” The authorities did not name the reasons. At the same time, the Russian state agency TASS, citing sources, writes that the airspace is closed in a radius of 200 km until 1:20 p.m. local time.

According to preliminary data, an “unidentified object similar to a large drone” was recorded over the city . Special operation “Carpet” was also announced in the region.

According to the regulations of the Russian special agencies, the “Carpet” signal can be announced in the following cases:

  • when an aircraft illegally crosses the state border of the Russian Federation,
  • when using weapons and combat equipment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation from the offending aircraft,
  • in the event of the appearance of unidentified aircraft and “other material objects” in the airspace.

At 11:00 a.m. in the city administration stated that the unidentified object through which the airspace was closed and the planes were diverted was not found. This information has not been officially confirmed either. Airspace restrictions have been lifted.
